Dear Halle,

You scared the life out of me! For a girl who always follows the rules and hates getting into trouble, you sure outdid yourself. I can’t believe how far you walked. Next time you go on a big adventure, take me with you! I would have written sooner, but Aunt Mimi said you needed your rest—as if reading my letters would somehow tire you out. Anyway, the news from here is—there is no news from here. School is boring without you. The weather is gloomy. Kenny is still a big bully. Blah, blah, blah. Oh, here’s one funny thing: You’ll never believe who Jennie dressed up as for Halloween. Greta Garbo! She had her hair fixed just like Greta’s, and she drew on these dark, dramatic eyebrows with her mother’s eye pencil. She had a hat pulled down over one eye and kept saying, “I want to be alone” and “Give me a whiskey” until Miss Rockwell heard and made her stop. I know you’re busy getting well but write if you can. Grandmother says when you are all better you can come with me to Buffalo some weekend, so get a move on, girl! I miss you like a pancake misses syrup. Stay out of trouble, and don’t take any wooden nickels.

Love,

Thelma

Halle smiled to herself. How had Thelma known just what to say and just when to write?

The letter had reminded her that she had good things to go back to when she and Mama were ready. For now, Halle had to stay healthy, and Mama had to get better. She just had to.
